Classification of Stroke

Brain Infarction

A brain infarction is a stroke resulting from a blockage in blood vessels supplying blood to the brain. It accounts for about 80% of stroke.

  • The most common cause of brain infarction is thrombus formation.
  • A thrombus is a mass of clotted blood in a vessel.
  • When too many thrombi form, they cannot all be broken down. Thrombi can break off, move through the bloodstream, and block an artery of the brain, causing a brain infarction.
