Mental Functions and the Cortex

The Four Lobes

Cognition, the content of our thinking, is closely tied to the cerebral cortex.

The cerebral cortex consists of the frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes. Cognitive functions are widely distributed through the association areas of the entire cerebral cortex, and are especially linked to the front part of the frontal lobe, called the prefrontal area.
